Wollondilly Council welcomes federal funding for bypass and picton road

Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould has welcomed today’s Federal Government announcement of $95.6 million in funding towards the Picton Bypass and Picton Road projects following strong advocacy by the Council.

The funding is part of a commitment to state infrastructure in this week’s Federal Budget, aimed at creating jobs, improving commuter safety and driving economic growth.

The NSW State Government has responded to Mr Nathaniel Smith’s MP, Member for Wollondilly petition for funding and delivery of a Picton Bypass. We have received a response from The Hon Andrew Constance MP, Minister for Transport and Roads.

Dear Ms Minnican,

I write in response to the petition lodged on 8 June by Mr Nathaniel Smith MP, Member for
Wollondilly, regarding the funding and delivery of a road to bypass Picton Town Centre.
Transport for NSW is currently investigating a future bypass of the Picton Town Centre
to ease congestion and provide an alternative route for freight and traffic by linking
Remembrance Driveway and Picton Road.

The project aims to improve safety, ease congestion and improve amenity in Picton Town
Centre. The project would also reduce the number of vehicles using Victoria Bridge and
provide an alternative route for evacuation during emergency events such as bushfire and
flood.

In December 2020, Transport for NSW consulted with the community on the preferred
corridor for the Picton Bypass. The consultation period ended in February 2021 and the
feedback provided will help Transport for NSW determine the preferred corridor.
The NSW Government has already provided $3 million to investigate potential options for a
future bypass of Picton and a further $14 million committed in 2021/22 to continue to plan
the duplication of Picton Road.

The preferred corridor would provide a new connection between Remembrance Driveway,
south of Wonga Road, and Picton Road, north-west of Maldon Bridge Road. Further design
work is underway and the community will continue to be kept updated as plans progress.

Bridge closure at Prince street highlights need for picton bypass

This week’s closure of the historic Victoria Bridge on Prince Street for upgrades by Transport for NSW has once again highlighted the urgent need for a bypass to allow traffic to flow freely through the Picton town centre.

Wollondilly Council on behalf of its residents has set up a petition with the support of State Member for Wollondilly Nathaniel Smith, calling on the NSW Government to commit to, fund and deliver a road bypass for Picton.

Petition launched calling for delivery of picton bypass

Wollondilly Council, on behalf of its residents, is calling on the NSW Government to commit to, fund and deliver a road bypass for Picton.

Now, together with Nathaniel Smith MP Member for Wollondilly, Council has launched a petition to make sure the voice of the community is heard loud and clear.

The petition was established following a resolution at the November Council meeting and seeks to address significant issues including the traffic chaos that arises in Picton when Victoria Bridge is closed for repairs or following accidents on the bridge.
