Council domestic waste collection contracts are typically awarded for periods of between 7 and 10 years, with options for extension periods. The longer a contract term is, the longer period the contractor has to cover the cost of the initial purchase of the vehicles, and therefore the more competitive their tendered prices will be. Wollondilly Shire Council’s current contract is with ‘JR Richards and Sons’ and is for an initial term of 9 years, with an option to extend for up to two years.
The contract commenced in 2015 and the initial term is due to expire in 2024. Council is currently considering whether to terminate the contract on expiry of the initial term or to take up the option of an extension.
A domestic waste collection contract needs to be awarded many months before its scheduled commencement date in order to provide the contractor sufficient time to have the collection vehicles built and delivered.
