An upgrade to the BMX Park Adventure Play at Tahmoor Sportsground is now complete. An Official Opening was held on 25 September 2023 at the track with Mayor Matt Gould, and Member for Blacktown Stephen Bali MP as a representative for Places to Play, Member for Wollondilly, Judy Hannan, Councillors Banasik, Brandstater and Briggs along with BMX track users all in attendance.
The attendees enjoyed a demonstration by locals involved in the Born to Ride Freestyle Association.
Mayor Matt Gould said, “The upgrades to the Park were appreciated by the riders and I recently had an opportunity to have a BMX ride there myself. I haven’t ridden a bike for years and I really enjoyed getting back out there.”
“Thanks to Mick and Loryn from Born to Ride Freestyle Association who organised for the riders to come along to provide some great entertainment and show the rest of us how it’s done”.
This project was funded by a $100,000 grant received through the NSW Government’s Places to Play program.
The Places to Play program helps to increase equitable access to public open space through a $16.7million investment in projects that provide for adventure, nature and water-based play activities such as mountain biking, scooter and skate places and pump tracks.
The project involved removing and rebuilding the beginner / intermediate jump lines with better designed and more sustainable jump trails, resulting in:
- a new beginner line
- a new beginner / Intermediate line
- a new intermediate line.
- a new return trail.
There are now a range of jump sizes and styles with straight jumps, hip jumps and no-gap jumps which all help cater to a range of different skills and abilities. The no-gap jumps provide more opportunities for riders to progress through the different levels as their skill and confidence increases. The no-gap jumps also ensure more sustainable jumps that are less subjected to erosion.
The starting ramp was also reshaped and a feature wall ride installed at the end of the jumps trail.
The dirt jumps are something that benefit from ongoing work by the users and Council encourages working bees at the park. Please contact Council if interested.
