Aiming to retain a sense of the past for future generations, Wollondilly Shire Council is inviting feedback on proposed updates to the local heritage list in the Wollondilly Local Environment Plan 2011 (LEP).

Over the past three years, community members have helped contribute to a Shire Wide Heritage Study to update existing heritage items and identify potential places and items for heritage listing.

The local heritage list has not been significantly reviewed for 30 years.

Mayor Matt Gould said, “Heritage listing helps us retain things that give us a sense of the past and our cultural identity, for the enjoyment of current and future generations. Heritage properties contribute to the character of our beautiful towns and villages.”

“The heritage listing of a place provides formal recognition by Council and /or the NSW Government, that the property has heritage significance and that the community wants it protected for the future.”

“This doesn’t mean you can’t make a change or that the property has to be kept like a museum. Changes and additions that respect and retain the significance of the heritage listing are encouraged.”

The proposed list includes 55 new heritage items, three new landscape conservation areas, a new Appin Road conservation area and an extension of the existing Picton conservation area.

There are also 49 amendments to existing items to update names, addresses and categories. A number of other items will be revised as they had been incorrectly listed or can be amalgamated with other items.
